I am not a top scorer, never got into the first class in my secondary, even primary. My SPM results, if you would compare it with other matriculation friends, was not very outstanding. Although I managed to secure 10 A's in SPM, I am still a far gap from claiming a bursary. Thanks to my extra-curriculum activities, which (I think) made me eligible to enter matriculation program.
I felt quite scared, entering a college in a place quite far form my hometown, not knowing how will life be there. Fortunately, I met a lot of my secondary school friends and thank goodness I had nice and friendly roommates that can have fun with together when we were too stressed up studying.
The life in KMNS was great despite the hectic syllabus that need to be covered within limited time and the orientation week! In matriculation program, all you need is to survive that ORIENTATION week! Well, not to say it's tough, it's just pack with activities all day, they will let you sleep around 11pm or 12pm at night and start knocking on your door at 3am in the morning, waking you up! That week was a torture. But as long as you survived that, everything will be fine.
In matriculation program, there are 3 science modules and an account module. All 4 modules consist of 4 core subjects.
Module 1- Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology
Module 2- Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science
Module 3- Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science
Accounts- Mathematics, Accounting, Business Management, Economics
Compulsory subjects for all students are:
- English
- Dynamic Skills
- Islamic / Moral Education
- Co-curriculum
I was offered Module 1 based on my results when I enter. However, for my personal preference, I dislike biology, due to massive syllabus of memorizing. Furthermore, I have decided that my future career will not have any relation to biology. Therefore, I chose to switch to module 2 as I took up Computer Science. That was a decision that I never regret taking. One of the classes that is most stress-free in college is Practical Class for Computer Science in the computer lab. I had a great teacher that allowed us to explore most of the software ourselves, therefore, it's a relax class and most importantly it was air-conditioned. I saw some of my friends really struggled with biology, hoping they could turn back time and switch module as well.

Comparing Matriculation program with form 6, the syllabus are almost the same, but form 6 will be tougher. This doesn't mean that matrics is easy. Our syllabus are all cramped and at the moment teacher finished teaching, after a few days, was the exam! We don't even had the chance to digest properly. The exam papers are not easy either, if you don't study, it's shown clearly in your results. However, one thing that makes matrics looks easier, it's easier to get an A in matrics as compared to form 6.
Let me share some of my experience with you. We have class 8am-5pm daily, except weekends. I don't know about others, but I stayed in block C4, quite a walking distance from lecture halls, tutorial rooms as well as library. Of course, as I'm staying far away, I need to get up earlier than my friends in block A and B. Walking takes time. However, you will get used to it sooner or later, and it could train your stamina and muscles as well. To be honest, I enjoyed staying in block C. It is located higher and further, therefore, it will be cooler and makes you feel like you're in Cameron Highlands or even Genting Highlands as early in the morning the place will be surrounded by thick mist.
All my Malay friends need to wear baju kurung everyday to class, but for non-bumi, we can wear formal attire (formal shirt, slacks with black covered shoes), though sometimes we can choose to wear baju kurung. Frankly, the food there is spicy. Well, there are some that are not spicy, but don't get conned by the colour of the food, thinking that it's non-spicy, for every colour, there's a possibility that chili is present!
Sports. After having classes until 5pm daily, when I'm not that tired, I'll go for a jog. KMNS do have many sports facilities. Besides jogging, I played basketball, volleyball, badminton etc with my friends during weekends. Squash and tennis court are also available. For the football players, there is a large field. Many people practices and friendship games were always held among students. If you are just a fan of football, you can just sit at the "Astaka" as the audience.
During weekends, we were allowed to go for an outing unless there were activities scheduled for us. There is a pasar malam in the pilah town that most of us went on Friday evenings, Econsave is just beside the pasar malam. Besides that, there's GAINT, a shopping center for most of us. Food, such as biscuits, instant noodles, bread, fruits and etc are available there and it's always crowded with matrics students during the weekends. If you get tired of the cafe food in college (as most of us will), you can call for a delivery (either Pizza Hut or Ayamas). Just a small note, unless the college have changed their rules(I assumed they won't), we need to be back in college before 7pm, else, your matrics card will be "tahan" for a couple of weeks if you arrived late.
In our college, there will always be activities held to help us gain our co-curriculum marks. Try to get yourself involve as a high co-curriculum marks will come in handy when you're applying for your university. If you're not an athlete, just like me, fear not, you don't need to depend on only the sports activities to get full marks in your co-curriculum. There are many other opportunities for you as well.
In my blog, there's an important information that I would like to share with you. Many people thought that Marticulation program will only lead you to a local, public university. I once thought so too, but thanks to a senior's blog, I found out that this concept was wrong. Matrics is accepted overseas. This is the list.
Universities that accept Matrics
UK:
-University of Nottingham
-University of Birmingham
-University of Surrey
-University of London
-University of Manchester
-University of Southampton
-University of Sheffield
-Athlone Institute of Technology
Australia:
-University of Sydney
-University of Adelaide
-Monash University
New Zealand:
-University of Wellington
I have applied to University of Nottingham, UK and already got accepted there. Thinking back, although Matriculation program was only one year (in my case) and was far away from my hometown, it was undoubtedly a great experience for me. I got the opportunity to meet friends of different races and states. Now, I have friends all over Malaysia and I'm proud of that. No matter how much you dislike the life in matrics, always complaining about this, that, but one day, believe me, you will miss those moments with your friends there, eating together, chatting, gossiping, playing around, celebrating most of our 18th and 19th birthday together. No doubt, I'm starting to miss all my friends already, wondering when will be the next gathering, as it's hard to meet up. If you are still wondering should you enter matriculation program, my advice: you're lucky to be chosen, just go, have fun and enjoy!
Above is my personal opinions and experience that I would like to share with you. If any of my statements offended you, I sincerely apologize. And lastly, hope you will find my sharing useful and handy.

you apply oversea right.you are given scholarship or what?
ReplyDeleteYup..I applied overseas through UCAS... mainly I'm self funded, but I also receive scholarship offered to me by the university. If you are considering to apply for scholarship, there are quite a few offered by the government or some organisations..but I do advice you to apply it soon.. :)
DeleteI'm going to matriks kmns this month..I took accounts..can I apply this uni?if yes, when i should apply this uni and scholarship? may i know the rules & regulations?
Deletedo you mean that you would want to apply to University of Nottingham? ya sure u can... but before you decide to apply for any university, do have a look at their website and analyse which university suits u the most and which degree are u up for... as for when to apply, start your application going after u got ur first PSPM results in matrix... in my case..i'll get a conditional offer which will then require me to submit my final PSPM results later on when I got them... u can try applying through UCAS if u wan.. cheers... :)
DeleteHey I'm enrolling into kmns this month. I'm taking module one for sc stream. I'm interested in applying to uni of Nottingham. Do you mind to share with me the process of applying the uni through UCAS? Also the entry requirements. Here is my email: jmby1997@hotmail.com thanks!
DeleteU said that u were tortured right?
ReplyDeleteCan u share what kind of torture do they give?
sort of torture...not trying to be racist here, but to be fair, everyone will be treated the same in matrix.. that means, we will sleep and wake up all at almost the same time everyday during the orientation week. they will let you sleep quite late at night and bang on your door starting from 3am in the morning..everyone will then queue for the washroom, taking cold baths early in the morning..and basically, when our Muslim friends have their group prayer in the hall, we will just go to the lecture hall...and most of us will choose to have a short nap..due to the lack of sleep... they will also ask you to change to this shirt or that one and gather back at a certain time... sort of a "fashion show"..haha! they just want you make you feel the worst so that for the rest of the matrix life...u'll feel that it's bearable as it's not as tough as the orientation week... it's kind of tiring..but flashing back...those are memories and good days where u'll smile...when you think of them... :)
DeleteYou mentioned that it's alright for non-bumiputera to choose ot to wear baju kurung to class, how about after class? Are we allowed to wear T-shirts and jeans during our free time?
ReplyDeleteAs I suppose the rules still remain the same, you are allowed to wear T-shirts and jeans. They only don't allow shorts and sleeveless top. :)
DeleteDoes round necked shirt considered as formal wear?
DeleteI don't think so. You can wear that during casual time, but not to classes.
DeleteAlright, thanks for your help :D
ReplyDeleteHi, may I know do private uni recognised matriks? Can I go for Monash Malaysia after that?
ReplyDeleteHi, as stated in the list, Monash in Aus will recognise this, and I suppose Monash Malaysia will recognise it as well. However, I do strongly suggest that you contact Monash directly to confirm it. :)
DeleteHey, are you in UK now?
ReplyDeleteYup
DeleteHow long are you in uk?
DeleteI currently have finished my second year of my 3 year course.
DeleteHello, im enrolling this 6th june. For the orientation, do i have to wear white tshirt all week? And for the muslim, is it compulsory to wear tudung?
ReplyDeleteSorry this came a bit late, was busy with finals recently. No, you don't have to wear white tshirt all week, as long as it is a formal shirt, it will be fine. For muslims, I think it will be compulsory to wear tudung for the first orientation week, then it is up to you.
DeleteCan i ask what course did you take for your degree in uk?
ReplyDeleteSorry for the late reply, I am currently taking the course of BSc(Hons) Mathematics and Management Studies in Nottingham, UK.
Deletehow did you apply for University Of Nottingham ? what are the process ? can you share ?
ReplyDeleteI applied through an application called UCAS, which allows you to apply to 5 different universities in the UK. I had help from an agent from JM Education Group. Basically, I submitted my trial results of matriculation and IELTS to apply, then I received conditional letter from all 5 universities. You will then get to choose one university as your first choice and another one as your insurance choice. After I got my final matriculation result, submitted it and the unconditional offer will become conditional offer. I got conditional offer from both my first choice and insurance choice, therefore, I chose to pursue my studies in my first choice university, which is University of Nottingham.
Delete祝我好运!我是理科班的。
ReplyDeleteWish me good luck..Even though I don't know you understand my above typing. Haha
愿你考试顺利,好好珍惜你即将创造的美好回忆。。
DeleteStudy hard, but also don't forget to enjoy yourself. :)
Hi!
ReplyDeleteFirst off, great post! I've been searching for matrikulasi stories and yours was among the blog posts that satisfied what I was looking for, so thank you! :D
Anyway, one question - since you're now in Nottingham, I wanted to know if you had any major problems catching up with the syllabus. This is one of the things I'm more concerned about. I don't mind reading up on extra stuff during my time in matrikulasi -if I get accepted, that is- but I still worry that there'll be a huge gap of knowledge between me and students from programmes like A Levels. Just need to have someone to confirm with, haha. Thanks a bunch!
Thanks! About that, because our syllabus is quite different, and for A-levels, their maths is definitely harder. In my personal experience, I did struggle a bit in Year 1, but I still managed to pull it through, just have to be more hard working than the others, as it is a revision to them, but brand new stuffs to me. You will be fine, just go with the flow! ;)
DeleteHye,,,
ReplyDeleteMay i know, would the japan university accept the matrics?
Hi,
DeleteSorry but I am not sure about this. I would suggest you to confirm it with the University that you will be applying to regarding the entry qualifications. All the best!
When dyou take your ielts? And lets say if ive already taken ielts, do i still need to enter their english classes in college? Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi, I took my IELTS after matriculation, cause I didn't know that I will need that. If you have already taken IELTS, you will still have to enter their English classes. I think it is compulsory, can't avoid that, but it is quite relaxing, no worries.
DeleteHow long you take to go for class?
ReplyDeleteIt took me about 15-20 minutes to walk to class. But this is because I was in Block C. If you stay in Block A, you could easily get to lecture halls within 5-10 minutes.
DeleteHi! I'm from Penang n going to KMNS soon. Just to ask which public transportation do u take to back to hometown?
ReplyDeleteHi, I took a car to LCCT (KLIA2 currently) and took a plane (AirAsia) back to Penang during holidays. During my year, there was an uncle that offered to drive us around with lower charges than taxis, but I think he did mention that he will be stopping this service soon, so perhaps you could opt for taking a cab to the airport. Fixing the price beforehand and sharing the cab with friends might make it cheaper.
Deletenice info.. tqvvm
ReplyDeleteHi Yu Ting! Hope you're doing well at Nottingham!
ReplyDeleteI'm currently in the process of filling up my UCAS application and am met with a small problem - whom did you get to write your reference letter? My past tutors are all not familiar with the English language. But perhaps I could offer to translate the reference letter for them? I would like to hear how you got your reference letter written and any advice would be appreciated! Thanks :)
Hi, I got my reference letters from my English teacher and class tutor when I was in matriculation. Hmm...offering to translate it might be the best option.. Or you could request reference letter from other former teacher of yours. All the best in your application :)
DeleteHi again, sorry if I'm bothering you a bit. Can I have your email? I have a few things I would like to ask you. Here's my email fI you would like to contact me directly: katerrific27@gmail.com
